Stacy Hoff's New Release Desire in the Arctic

I’m excited to be on Maggie’s blog! I’m also excited to share an excerpt of my new release, DESIRE IN THE ARCTIC. I hope people love reading about a cold climate that, due to the hero and heroine’s attraction to each other, gets very steamy.

This is the first time I’ve ever written a sequel. (DESIRE IN THE EVERGLADES is the first book.) I wanted ARCTIC to be sufficiently stand-alone that a reader would not be lost or confused if they had not read EVERGLADES. The tricky part was coming up with new characters that were as strong (and fun) as the old.
Did my efforts pay off? Read ahead and let me know!

Book blurb
Ana Davis has been given the promotion of the century—from secretary to television producer. But the new job is not without its problems.
The network will do anything for ratings. In the executive’s scramble to come out on top, they reveal Ana’s newest show—one she’s forced to star in herself. She’ll have to survive in the Arctic Circle for twelve days. If she wins, she’ll get the prize money she desperately needs. But the stakes are high, she could lose her very life. Good thing she’s been paired with expert survivalist William “Redd” Redding, a mysterious, solitary and very sexy man. Too bad she thinks he doesn’t even want to talk to her.
William “Redd” Redding is a former Special Ops Marine in need of cash to help a cause near and dear to his heart. What he’s not in need of, however, is Ana Davis—his clueless but captivating partner. It’s up to Redd to ensure the two of them survive in the most dangerous, hostile environment of all. But worse than snowstorms, predators, and a scarcity of food is an even greater danger—Ana. Resisting her, when he wants her more than anything, is his hardest challenge yet. How does he go about protecting her when his ultimate goal is to protect his heart?

Excerpt

“I’m not into surprises, Ana,” Redd said gruffly. “Not when our lives are on the line. Do you have any survival skills or don’t you? I’ve got to know exactly what I’m dealing with.”
“I-I’m sorry,” Ana stuttered, although she wasn’t sure what she was apologizing for. Her slow response, or for not being somebody better?
“Just level with me, okay?” he said again, gentler this time. “I won’t be mad. Panicked, maybe. But not mad. At least not mad at you.” He managed to give her a small smile. She wished to God it was sincere.
“All right, I’ll level. But I hope you won’t be too upset. I don’t have any survival skills at all.”
“None at all,” he repeated tonelessly.
“Well, no. I grew up in Brooklyn. The show wants me to say I’m from Manhattan but you said you want me to be honest.”
“Have you at least gone camping before?”
“Yes!”
“Great.” He exhaled hard, his expression showing relief. “How often do you go?”
“I’ve only been once, actually. But that still counts, right?”
“That depends,” he said, looking as if he had a sudden, severe headache.
“I went during summer camp, right after seventh grade. My whole bunk slept outside. It was fun. The counselors even let us roast a whole bag of marshmallows.”
She could have sworn she heard him swallow. It was almost as if he was choking on one of those marshmallows.
“Any hiking experience?” he asked weakly.
Be engaging, Ana. Don’t look so scared. Crack a joke or something. She managed a playful smile. “Close. I’ve told people to take a hike.”
He bit down on his lip. It looked like he was in pain. “Fishing?”
“No. The closest I’ve gotten to fishing is picking up jars of herring from the supermarket.” Taking one look at his ashen expression, she added, “I’m a fast learner though. If you teach me how to do these things, I’ll catch on quick. I even managed to learn a whole lot about wilderness survival before I came up here.”
“I think I need a beer,” he said, abruptly changing the topic.
“I can get you one, if you want.” Ana felt her face go hot.
When he stepped away, she put a hand on his shoulder, stopping him. “Look, I’m sorry I’m not what you wanted in a partner,” she said quietly. “I kinda got forced into this. With no notice for me to prepare.”
He swallowed again, seemingly making a determined effort to soften his countenance. “I’m sure you’ll do fine. Just do what I tell you, and we’ll get through this ordeal as best as we can.” His face was so scrunched up now he could have been a shar-pei puppy. “How’d they force you?”
“I’m their newest producer. I don’t have much track record yet, so . . .”
“That explains it.”

New release To Rome with Love by Mandi Benet

I am thrilled to have Mandi on my blog today telling us about her new release. I have to say I have always wanted to go to Italy.

BLURB:To Rome with Love

When Gaby Conte’s Italian husband, Danieli, abandons her for a young Peruvian waitress at a restaurant they co-own in San Francisco, Gaby seeks refuge in Rome with her best friend Maria. There, she swears off romance for a long while and Italian men forever.

That’s until she meets Silvio, who belongs to an old, aristocratic Roman family and lives in a palace alongside the best private art collection in Rome. Silvio, who is the cousin of Maria’s husband, is going through his own divorce. He’s gorgeous, of course, which Gaby doesn’t tell him. And arrogant and condescending, which she does. The last thing Gaby needs is more Italian trouble, but the attraction is instant and powerful, and against the backdrop of one of the world’s most romantic cities, both try—and fail—to resist the chemistry between them.

But both Gaby and Silvio have made a rule never to make the mistake of trusting in love again. Will they realize some rules are made just to be broken?

Skywatcher Dragon Wine Book 2

Thank you Maggie for having me as a guest. I write in a range of genres,  paranormal romance, young adult SF romance, dark fantasy and yet even in the non-romance novels there always has to be an element of romance for me. My Dragon Wine series (Shatterwing and Skywatcher) is considered to be quite dark and it is…it’s a bit nasty, yet I feel there is an element of romance in there. Actually let’s be clear there is a romance in there but the book would not be considered a romance. It’s way too dark I’m thinking to be thought of as romantic. I think romantic elements are important to readers. It doesn’t have to be gushy or overly sexy, which it isn’t in Dragon Wine, but there has to be human connection and what better way to demonstrate that than having characters love other characters. Strong friendships work in lieu of romance too to give that romantic tough.

The dragon wine series contains two romances albeit two love triangles. The first love triangle is between Salinda, Danton and Nils. The other love triangle is with the younger characters, Garan, Laidan and Brill. The uncertainty in the relationships causes some angst between the younger characters for sure.

I had one person leave a review on Goodreads so angry with me with the turn of the romance in Skywatcher (book two). I believe I lost a reader there but I’m thinking in my head (as you do) that the story isn’t over yet and maybe that person would benefit from reading more of the story when it’s available. I can understand her sentiment entirely and I suppose it is good that someone reacted so strongly to the characters not doing what the reader expected.

Now that I’m writing this within this analytical frame I’m not sure I actually intended to have two love triangles. It just happened. What a cop out! I actually don’t like love triangles myself. I find them divisive! Hahaha…I’m always barracking for the one who misses out. I’m thinking here of Cassandra Clare’s  Infernal Devices series. I can’t comment more because I might spoil it for you.

Now did I mention there’s dragons in Dragon wine?

Blurb
Dragon wine could save them. Or bring about their destruction.
Since the moon shattered, the once peaceful and plentiful world has become a desolate wasteland. Factions fight for ownership of the remaining resources as pieces of the broken moon rain down, bringing chaos, destruction and death.
The most precious of these resources is dragon wine – a life-giving drink made from the essence of dragons. But the making of the wine is perilous and so is undertaken by prisoners. Perhaps even more dangerous than the wine production is the Inspector, the sadistic ruler of the prison vineyard who plans to use the precious drink to rule the world.
There are only two people that stand in his way. Brill, a young royal rebel who seeks to bring about revolution, and Salinda, the prison’s best vintner and possessor of a powerful and ancient gift that she is only beginning to understand. To stop the Inspector, Salinda must learn to harness her power so that she and Brill can escape, and stop the dragon wine from falling into the wrong hands.
Dragon Wine Book 2 :Skywatcher, the follow on book is also available in ebook and print.

Chasing The Painted Skies by Ryan Jo Summers

Today we have the talented Ryan Jo Summers visiting to tell us about her latest release

Chasing the Painted Skies

Part mystery, part treasure hunt, part alternative paranormal, a dash of ghost story and all romance.

Blurb:

Raven Koynes is a woman in hiding. Years ago she escaped to remote Gull Island Light Station, nestled far away in Lake Superior. She has carved out a life of peace and solitude for herself. Until famed nature photographer Sebastian Knight arrives--in the  height of a nor'easter storm--to document the beauty of Gull Island. Unsavory treasure hunters also blow in with the storm, determined to find missing cargo from a sunken ship. And they are positive Raven knows where it's stashed. A power outage from the storm traps everyone at her keeper's cottage, fellow prisoners of the storm.

Between her attraction to handsome Sebastian and the unwelcome advances and threats of the hunters, Raven is pushed to her limit. Help arrives in the form of a stray German Shepherd Dog, who takes an immediate protective interest in Raven. He becomes her constant shadow and listening ear as she sorts out her growing--and conflicting--feelings for Sebastian.

Meanwhile, Sebastian came to the island looking for treasure as well, in the form of photographs. While he isn't so sure about missing cargo, he only needs to look at Raven Koynes to know he's found his own valuable treasure. One he hopes he can hang on to if she learns about his mysterious secret.

Now that Madeline the resident ghost has found out, it's probably just a matter of time until Raven does too. And with the storm and power outage, no one is going anywhere any time soon.

EXCERPT:

The music, drifting softly on the evening breezes, stopped her. Following the sound, she spotted Sebastian already in the gazebo, bathed in twilight and a glow from the oil lantern in front of him. He looked the picture of concentration in the shadow of the light. He wore a golden saxophone around his neck, his fingers moving lightly over the keys. The sound hypnotized Raven. Leaning against the porch railing, fingers cradling the mug, she watched and listened.

He played a few chords, stopping and scribbling in a black notebook with a stubby pencil, only to resume the music again. The sax glinted off the lanterns light. Rich and wonderful, soulful and almost haunting, the music held her.

She watched Sebastian’s fingers as they confidently over the instrument, like a familiar friend. She could imagine those long fingers moving over her skin. Heat grew inside her, rolling over her in waves.

Time ceased. Fragment by fragment, she felt the cold, hard pieces inside her melting away, yielding. She had vowed to never fall for another man, to never love again. To refrain from becoming involved or to trust. But Sebastian Knight’s lilting strands artfully and slowly slipped loose the knots of her heart, making her lose sight of those important vows.

If she were smart, she would leave now. Just stop listening, quit watching his face in the twilight’s glow and walk away. Better yet, run away. Go anywhere. Someplace she could not hear or see him.

So why couldn’t she? Why did the silky strands of his music hold her heart captive? She’d never particularly cared for sax music or any music before. Most of it was okay, but she preferred silence. Why did this beautiful and poignant sound draw her in? Why did it untie those knots of resolution in her heart and mind? How did he awake a desire within her that she thought was forever gone?

Trembling, she forced herself to move. Slowly backing up she returned to the house, leaving the mug on the counter and going upstairs to the balcony of her room. Sitting alone in the deepening twilight, she bowed her head, letting the tears fall.
